Shaquille O'Neal intends to run for sheriff in 2020.

The Hall of Famer made the announcement Friday, explaining his decision to Julie Wolfe of WXIA in Atlanta.

"This is not about politics," he said. "It's something that I've always wanted to do. This is about bringing people closer together. You know, when I was coming up, people love and respected the police, the deputies. And, I want to be the one to bring that back, especially in the community that I serve."

O'Neal has no law enforcement experience, though he was sworn in as an honorary sheriff's deputy in Clayton County, Ga., in December. Wolfe noted that he could run in Georgia or Florida, where he has residencies.
