Report: 76ers turned down Cavs' interest in McConnell

Brett Davis / USA TODAY Sports

LeBron James' desire for another playmaker in Cleveland has been well-documented, but the Cavaliers have reportedly already been rebuffed in their pursuit of at least one ball-handler.

Citing multiple sources, the Philly Inquirer's Keith Pompey reports that the Philadelphia 76ers turned the Cavs down when approached about a deal for sophomore point guard T.J. McConnell.

McConnell isn't much of an individual offensive threat, but would have addressed the defending champions' need for an additional facilitator, with the 24-year-old averaging 5.9 assists in only 23 minutes per game.

While it's not clear what the Cavs were offering in exchange for McConnell's services, the 76ers' reported decision to reject the offer could be an indication that McConnell has played his way into Philadelphia's plans, at least in the short term.

McConnell is in the second year of a four-year contract that will see him earn less than $900,000 this season, with the third and fourth years of his deal non-guaranteed.

The Cavs have also been linked to veteran point guards Jameer Nelson and Shelvin Mack in recent reports.
