Sprint Media Tour Stop #7: Roush Fenway Racing
The first stop of the Sprint Media Tour this morning was the Roush Fenway Racing boys, but without Jack Roush, as he's a Disney vacation in Orlando. It's been 10 years since RFR has hoisted a Cup trophy, and this is the year that they want to change that. The news conference featured their full stable of drivers, from the young Chris Buescher and Ryan Reed to veterans Trevor Bayne (he's considered one now), Carl Edwards, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Greg Biffle.
RFR president Steve Newmark wasn't too happy with the performance from the team last year. "The results from last year were not acceptable, a high level of dissatisfaction really."
Some highlights from some of the drivers:
Carl Edwards
Carl Edwards seemed to be the most candid out of all the RFR drivers when talking about the new proposed Chase rules. While he noted the significant strength that Roush possesses at Homestead, he just isn't sure that these new rules are the way to.
"A driver could win 35 races then blow a tire in the final race. Is that fair?" Edwards asked the reporters. "Breaking from tradition isn't easy," Edwards said, "but if this is what NASCAR thinks is best, then I can't do anything about it. All I do is drive the race car."
You could tell that Edwards was trying to calculate a response in his head that wouldn't get him into any trouble. It's clear that he's been thinking about this a lot and has a lot of thoughts about these new rules, but would rather wait until the rules are official.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
The yellow stripes are off the rear bumper as Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is entering his second full-time season in the Cup Series. After picking up the Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award last season, Stenhouse is set to go for 2014, this time being reunited with crew chief Mike Kelly.
"Mike and I have the best chemistry, and I'm glad he's back with me this year," Stenhouse said. Stenhouse Jr. with Mike Kelly won the Nationwide Series Championships back-to-back in 2011 and 2012.
Stenhouse also has some sponsor news: Nationwide Insurance will sponsor him for the Sprint Unlimited, the Daytona 500 and then the first races at Bristol, Darlington, Richmond and Dover.
Greg Biffle
When it comes to the Chase, Biffle isn't 100% sure that a Homestead "Game 7" type finale is the best idea. He said that all tracks are different, and isn't sure "why so much emphasis is being put on one track."
