Weidman setting sights on Jones, other 205ers after he clears out middleweights
Chris Weidman thinks he's running out of challenges at 185 pounds.
With a bout against Luke Rockhold on the horizon, Weidman figures he'll have thoroughly cleaned out the weight class once he triumphs over Rockhold and the winner of Yoel Romero vs. Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza. After that, he has his sights set on returning pound-for-pound kingpin Jon Jones and the rest of the light heavyweight division.
"I've got to focus on Luke, and the winner of 'Jacare' (vs.) Romero," he told fans during a recent question-and-answer session, according to FOX Sports' Elias Cepeda.
"And then after that, we'll start talking about Jon Jones, and 205, and anyone who is good, up there."
Instead of trying to reign over the division with an iron fist like Anderson Silva before him, Weidman is looking for new challenges, and doesn't think his thirst to compete will be sufficiently sated at 185 pounds.
"I'm going to say that my future does eventually take me to 205," Weidman said.
"Not because of weight-cutting at middleweight, but just because I think I'm running out of guys to beat at middleweight. Some of the tougher challenges are probably going to be done, soon."
Before he can move on from middleweight, Weidman will have to topple Rockhold, a Swiss Army knife of violence that will likely prove to be the toughest test of the champion's reign.
Weidman, however, isn't worried.
"I'm thinking, first, second, or third," he guessed, when asked when he'd polish off Rockhold.
"I'm thinking that in the first three rounds, it will be finished."
