UFC 179: Aldo retains title in 5-round battle
Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports
The king stayed the king in Brazil.
UFC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo narrowly outgunned Chad Mendes en route to a thrilling unanimous decision in an epic five-round war.
Aldo looked to win the fight late in the first round when a buzzer-beating right hand found Mendes' chin and sent him staggering into the cage. The Team Alpha male product was saved by the bell, and had fully recovered before the start of the second frame.
The two men, in an almost twisted game of chicken, stood toe-to-toe for five rounds and hurled absolute bombs at each other, with Aldo emerging victorious after 25 minutes.
Following the fight, Aldo took a not-so-subtle jab at outspoken Irishman, Conor McGregor.
