UFC 175: Uriah Hall fights through broken toe for decision victory

Jayne Kamin-Oncea / USA Today Sports

Note: The heavyweight fight between Stefan Struve and Matt Mitrione has been scratched from the card after Struve had a pre-fight medical issue.

Uriah Hall is one tough, tough dude.

On Saturday night, he suffered what appeared to bea severely broke toe in the first round of his middleweight battle against Thiago Santos. A gruesome close-up after round one confirmed as much, and later shots showed a bone sticking out of the second toe on his right foot.

That was not enough to stop Hall, however, who continued to fight through the pain, even throwing several kick attempts with the injured hoof.

"When life knocks you in the face...you get up and you say 'you hit like a bitch,'" Hall said of fighting through the pain.

Well, that's certainly one way to approach an injury. And credit Hall for adjusting his strategy, too, as he turned up the pace and aggression coming out of the first round, clearly looking to end the fight quickly. It didn't work out that way, as Santos smartly pulled back the pace at which he was willing to engage, but Hall did enough to earn the edge on each scorecard, winning 29-28, 29-28, 30-27.

With the win, Hall (9-4, 2-2 in UFC) has some momentum going with back-to-back victories, and his speed is very clearly something the middleweight division is going to struggle to adjust to. Santos (9-3, 1-2 in UFC) continued his recent up and down stretch and may walk away disappointed that he couldn't capitalize on the injury.

Not that anyone will be talking about Santos after this one.
