If UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski moves up to the lightweight division, the man he would want to face the most is Conor McGregor.
Volkanovski said Monday he considers that a dream matchup because McGregor is the only former 145-pound titleholder he hasn't defeated. He believes a win over McGregor would be a crucial step toward becoming the greatest featherweight ever.
"To go out there and sort of just show the world that I am the greatest featherweight of all time, that would be a big fight for me," Volkanovski told Submission Radio. "And, obviously, then you're talking about the circus around it. ... It would be a big opportunity, a fun fight. And it makes sense because, again, I want that GOAT status."
While Volkanovski is focused on defending his featherweight title, the Australian said in December he plans to eventually move up to the 155-pound division. He revealed Monday that could happen as soon as the end of this year or 2022.
For now, the 32-year-old is reportedly scheduled to meet Brian Ortega at UFC 260 on March 27.
