Melvin Guillard receives 1-year suspension after failing drug test
Melvin Guillard is facing a one-year suspension from MMA competition after testing positive for a non-PED stemming from an in-competition test from Bellator 159.
The Kansas Athletic Commission announced the suspension on Friday, according to MMA Fighting's Marc Raimondi.
Bellator 159 took place in Mulvane, Kan., on July 23, with Guillard fighting in the co-main event against David Rickels. The bout already had a cloud hanging over it as Guillard had failed to weigh in under the lightweight limit the day prior.
Guillard would go on to win by first-round KO, but that result will be overturned in the wake of his drug test failure and he will be fined $10,000 in addition to being suspended.
"The first and foremost job of the Kansas Athletic Commission is to protect the health and welfare of the fighters we are charged with regulating," Kansas commission head Adam Roorbach said. "Banned substances have no place in the world of combat sports, and their usage will not be allowed in the state of Kansas."
A former standout in the UFC's lightweight division, Guillard previously tested positive for cocaine in 2007 following a loss to Joe Stevenson. He was fined $2,100 for that infraction and suspended for eight months.
