VIDEO: Villa handball, TFC's awful defending leads to NYCFC goal

New York City FC kicked things off at Yankee Stadium in style, scoring a penalty and then adding a second in controversial fashion for a 2-1 halftime lead over Toronto FC.

While the penalty was merited - albeit hilariously scored, as goalkeeper Clint Irwin flopped to the ground during the attempt - the second goal was borne both of controversy and incompetence.

Toronto's back four failed to clear a free-kick swung into the box, whiffing at each clearance attempt. Then, the ball bounced toward David Villa, who, battling with Steven Beitashour, controlled first with his arm, then buried the effort for two.

The referee didn't catch the handball, but Damien Perquis pulled one back for Toronto at halftime off a Sebastian Giovinco free-kick.
