Sporting KC signs Portuguese defender Nuno Andre Coelho

Sporting Kansas City announced Tuesday they've signed Portuguese defender Nuno Andre Coelho out of Turkish outfit Balikesirspor.

Coelho, 30, joins Sporting KC after plying his trade in Portugal with FC Porto, Braga, and Sporting CP for the better part of the past decade. He's amassed plenty of playing time and has experience in the UEFA Champions League, too.

"I am very excited to join Sporting Kansas City," Coelho said in a statement. "This is a club with a very good reputation and I think it will be a perfect fit for me."

Head coach Peter Vermes is pleased with the acquisition, explaining that Coelho joins the team "with a tremendous amount of experience" and "adds another dimension to how we want to play as a team."

Coelho has featured in seven Champions League games with Porto and Braga.
