Patricof will take over in March as current president Tom Glick transitions away from his role, with Glick saying he is "pleased to be part of the preparations" for the club's second season before he departs the team.
"(Patricof) has a fantastic feel for the New York community and rich experience across business and entertainment," NYCFC vice chairman Marty Edelman said in a statement. "Over a relatively short time, he has done an exceptional job with Tribeca and we believe he is the right person to lead the club into the next phase of our history."
Patricof is excited to take on this new challenge, having spent much of his career in charge of the Tribeca Film Festivals. He described NYCFC as a club "that has already had a significant impact on the New York community in its first year.
"There are tremendous opportunities for growth and I am looking forward to working with ... the front office team to deliver a great experience for our fans, partners, and for New Yorkers," Patricof said.
New York City FC, owned by City Football Group, recently changed head coaches, with Jason Kreis departing to make way for Patrick Vieira.
City Football Group CEO Ferran Soriano said he is "delighted" to welcome Patricof as well.
"He has the experience, the passion and the vision to build on the excellent work that Tom Glick has been implementing," Soriano said. "He joins a club already rooted in the five boroughs of New York and with solid foundations across the board. I am looking forward to working with him."
