Report: Colorado Rapids to acquire Marco Pappa from Seattle
The Colorado Rapids are reportedly set to acquire midfielder Marco Pappa from the Seattle Sounders, according to Daniel Boniface from The Denver Post.
Terms of the deal weren't reported and it's not clear what the Rapids would be sending to Seattle in exchange for the Guatemalan international. But the Sounders released a statement, declining to comment on the validity of the report but offered the following from general manager Garth Lagerway:
"This is a judgement that we weren’t able to afford the option in (Pappa's) contract. He’s a guy who we have ongoing conversations with, and hopefully we figure something out. If we can’t, we hope he does well wherever he ends up."
Pappa, 28, was eligible for the 2015 MLS Re-Entry Draft leading up to Friday's first round, but was inexplicably pulled from selection shortly before the draft commenced.
His 2016 contract option was declined by the Sounders.
The reason for that withdrawal was reportedly due to an upcoming trade with the Rapids.
Pappa, formerly of the Chicago Fire, joined the Sounders in 2014 and has 35 goals in 161 league games since 2008. Apart from a short stint in the Dutch league with Heerenveen between 2012-2014, he's been a regular face within MLS.
