New York Red Bulls sign Gonzalo Veron as a Designated Player
The New York Red Bulls announced a new Designated Player signing on Wednesday morning, picking up Argentine winger Gonzalo Veron from Club Atletico San Lorenzo, pending receipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate.
Veron, 25, made 15 appearances last season for San Lorenzo, scoring two goals and recording three assists. He helped his team compete through the FIFA Club World Cup last year, too, after San Lorenzo won the Copa Libertadores in 2014.
"We are excited to add Gonzalo to our club," Jesse Marsch, the team's head coach, said in a statement. "We think he fits into the style that we want to play. He is a young, exciting player with the ability to play a few different attacking roles. He has the potential to be a dynamic player in this league."
"Gonzalo is a young, dynamic player who fits extremely well into our style of play," club director Ali Curtis said. "He has played for one of the top teams in South America and has shown he can play any of the front four positions. Not only are we getting a player who can help us immediately, he is someone who fits well into our long-term plans for our club."
Veron could be made available for the club's derby day match against New York City FC on Sunday.
As per league and team policies, terms of the deal were not made public.
