Report: Toronto FC striker Gilberto not taking part in preseason training camp
The writing has been on the wall throughout the winter.
With Toronto FC signing high-priced attackers Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco this offseason, Brazilian striker Gilberto, who signed as a Designated Player with the club just last year, looks to be the odd man out.
Gilberto is not joining the team for preseason training, reports Kurtis Larson of the Toronto Sun. He's been asked instead to remain in Brazil while general manager Tim Bezbatchenko fields multiple "good offers" to unload the 25-year-old - and his hefty salary (over $1 million per season).
Gilberto endured a mediocre campaign during his first year in Toronto, always putting in enormous effort on the pitch but often finding himself frustrated with his inability to find the net.
In 21 starts last season, he scored seven goals.
