Rapids acquire Kellyn Acosta; Dominique Badji joins FC Dallas

The Colorado Rapids added midfielder Kellyn Acosta to their ranks Monday, with Dominique Badji and an international roster spot going to FC Dallas as part of the deal.

The clubs will additionally swap first-round picks in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, and Colorado receives FC Dallas' second-round selection. Both teams will also retain 50 percent of any international transfer value through the 2020 secondary transfer window.

Acosta, 22, has represented the United States on 17 occasions, scoring his first goal for his country in a friendly against Ghana in July 2017. The Texan has amassed 115 Major League Soccer appearances, scoring eight times and assisting a dozen goals.

"Kellyn Acosta is one of the bright young players in U.S. Soccer," said Rapids executive vice president and general manager Padraig Smith. "His versatility in the midfield and ability to control games, get forward and break lines is something that will help this team both this season and in years to come. We can't wait to welcome him to Colorado."

Acosta has been commonly used as a central midfielder in the 2018 MLS campaign, and in that position would battle it out with Jack Price, Johan Blomberg, Enzo Martinez, and natural center-back Danny Wilson for minutes.
