Report: Rooney agrees to 'deal in principle' to join MLS side D.C. United

Wayne Rooney is ready to make the jump across the pond.

The Everton forward has reportedly agreed to a £12.5-million "deal in principle" with D.C. United that could see him join the Major League Soccer franchise this summer until 2020, according to Simon Stone of the BBC.

Rooney, however, could still change his mind about the deal amid uncertainty surrounding manager Sam Allardyce's future with the Merseyside club, Stone adds.

According to Sky Sports, the agreement between Rooney and the MLS side was said to be seven weeks in the making, with the former Manchester United forward's agent said to have travelled to the United States to meet directly with Jason Levien, D.C. United's managing general partner and chief executive officer. A report over the weekend suggested both parties were in the advanced stage of negotiations.

If the deal is made official, it would cement Rooney as the most expensive transfer in MLS history, overtaking Argentinian attacker Ezequiel Barco who joined Atlanta United from Independiente for a reported €12.28 million in January (Rooney's transfer fee currently translates to approximately €14.18 million).

The 32-year-old, who announced he had retired from international duty with England in August, has scored 10 goals for Everton this season in 31 Premier League appearances. He also scored 183 goals for Manchester United in 393 league matches with the Red Devils before returning to his boyhood club last summer.
