Report: Atlanta turned down record offers for Almiron, Martinez
Atlanta United isn't ready to part with its star players just yet ... at least, not at the current price.
The Five Stripes turned down big offers over the summer for both Miguel Almiron and Josef Martinez, with the former commanding a transfer with a fee between $20 million-$25 million, and the latter subject to a $10-million offer, Sam Stejskal of MLSsoccer.com reports.
Stejskal adds that the bids came from European clubs.
The two enjoyed solid debut seasons in MLS under Tata Martino, with Almiron scoring nine goals and recording 14 assists in 30 regular-season appearances, and Martinez notching 19 goals and one assist in 20 matches. Should either be sold, the fee might very well eclipse the league-record $10 million paid by Villarreal in 2008 to acquire Jozy Altidore, who's now with Toronto FC.
