Orlando City and Canadian national team midfielder Will Johnson was arrested Wednesday morning on a domestic battery charge.

Johnson was taken to an Orange County jail at 2:37 a.m. ET for an alleged incident involving his wife, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, and has since been suspended by Major League Soccer.

"Major League Soccer will remain in close communication with Orlando City SC, local law enforcement, and the MLS Players Union during this investigation," a statement from the league read. "MLS will not have further comment on this matter until the conclusion of the League's investigation."

Orlando City released a similar statement, adding that the club "fully supports the league's decision to suspend the player pending further investigation."

Police responded to a domestic violence call at 11:26 p.m. ET on Tuesday. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Johnson's wife, Caroline Childs Johnson, said in a verbal and sworn statement that the 30-year-old midfielder tackled her, "wrapping both of his arms completely around her waist."

Childs Johnson's statement adds that she fell to the ground and struck the right side of her head on a brick patio, and also received injuries to her right knee, left hand, and right arm. A police deputy took photographs of Childs Johnson's injuries that were consistent with her statement.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office deputy said that Childs Johnson has no plans to prosecute criminally, but will testify in court if need be. The couple of five years is currently in the midst of divorce proceedings, and have two young children together.

Johnson is the second Toronto-area member of Orlando's first team to be arrested this year after striker Cyle Larin failed a roadside sobriety test when he blew .179, more than double the legal limit in June.
