Whitecaps extend midfielder Mezquida
The Vancouver Whitecaps have re-signed Uruguayan attacking midfielder Nicolas Mezquida to a new contract through 2018.
Vancouver announced the move Wednesday, adding that the deal includes a club option for 2019.
Mezquida, 25, joined the MLS side in 2014 from Uruguayan club Boston River, and has since made 73 appearances for the club in all competitions, pairing nine goals with four assists.
"We’re delighted to re-sign Nico to a new contract," Whitecaps gaffer Carl Robinson said. "His personality and work rate is infectious. He has been a key member of our squad and has continued to grow and mature during his time with us. Nico will continue to be a big part of our club moving forward."
A standout 2016 campaign prompted Mezquida's new contract, with the Penarol product in the starting XI for 22 of his 34 appearances, with the former youth international bagging six goals while recording an assist. Mezquida's displays were rewarded, as the 25-year-old nabbed the Jock McDonald Unsung Hero award at season's end.
"It is a privilege to play for an amazing team in a soccer city," Mezquida offered after putting pen to paper on his new deal. "The fans and friends in Vancouver have made me feel at home. I hope to help write history with the team and all of you."
