Philadelphia adds Haris Medunjanin to midfield ranks
The Philadelphia Union announced Tuesday the club has signed midfielder Haris Medunjanin from Maccabi Tel-Aviv, using Targeted Allocation Money to pen the Bosnia and Herzegovina international to a two-year contract with an optional third year.
Capped 55 times for Bosnia with eight international goals to his name, the 31-year-old, Sarajevo-born midfielder brings plenty of European playing experience, having enjoyed stints at AZ Alkmaar, Valladolid, and Deportivo La Coruna, among others.
"We are extremely happy to add a player of Haris' caliber," Union sporting director Earnie Stewart said in a club-issued statement. "Having played at the highest levels of our game, be brings both quality and experience to our midfield. We're anxious for Haris to join our group as we continue to prepare for the start of the season."
Medunjanin joins Jim Curtin's side ahead of the 2017 MLS season and will compete with a fair few established figures for a spot in the starting lineup; with Maurice Edu and Alejandro Bedoya likely guaranteed starting spots if healthy, Medunjanin will need to displace Roland Alberg from Curtin's preferred trio.
