Atlanta United signs Spurs' Anton Walkes on 6-month loan
Atlanta United's inaugural season roster has grown once again with the club announcing Thursday the acquisition of Tottenham center-back Anton Walkes, who joins the MLS expansion side on a six-month loan as a Discovery Signing.
The 19-year-old recently made his Spurs debut in the third round of the English League Cup and will compete with Michael Parkhurst, Zach Loyd, and No. 2 overall SuperDraft pick Miles Robinson in Gerardo Martino's side.
"Anton has a bright future and we're thrilled to have him continue his development at our club," Atlanta president Darren Eales said in a statement. "He's a young player who's already been part of the first team squad at Spurs, featuring often throughout the summer until his official debut in the League Cup in September. He'll be a welcome addition to our club."
It seems his development will also establish exactly what role Walkes will fulfill in his career, since he's listed as a center-back by Atlanta but as a midfielder by Spurs. His versatility could be a big asset for an expansion team that has yet to establish its own identity, either.
In any case, Walkes will find a bit more first-division playing time with Atlanta, having played just 10 minutes as a substitute against Gillingham for Spurs.
