Report: D.C. United fans could face social media ban at RFK Stadium

Hot takes might be banned from RFK Stadium in 2017 as D.C. United fans looking to purchase season tickets might have to give up a few social media liberties alongside their hard-earned cash.

The Washingtonian reports that the wording in an online contract D.C. United asks fans to acknowledge and electronically sign before purchasing season tickets seems to indicate that the club could quash all forms of commentary on social media should it so choose.

The contract prohibits a few vague-sounding methods of sharing media, which could include tweeting or sharing on various methods of social media.

"You agree not to transmit, distribute, or sell (or aid in transmitting, distributing or selling), in any media any description, account, picture, video, audio, or other form of reproduction of any DC United game or any surrounding activities for which your ticket is issued," the contract reads, as quoted by The Washingtonian.

While the wording is open to interpretation, The Washingtonian reports that a D.C. United spokeswoman, Lindsay Simpson, said the language and intent of the contract is to protect from online video streams of its matches.

"The language is built in to protect those commercial interests," Simpson says. "The reason to send this out to our fans is part of our relationship, (to) clarify what the expectations are, what the exchange is between two parties."
