It took longer than he probably would've liked, but Hyun Soo Kim finally has a batting average.
Hitless in first 23 at-bats this spring, the Korean expatriate snapped his dismal stretch Thursday with a run-scoring infield single in the seventh inning after first going 0-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch in his club's exhibition with the New York Yankees.
Kim, who received a hearty hand from the crowd at Ed Smith Stadium after legging out a chopper to shortstop, was among the best hitters in the Korea Baseball Organization before signing with the Baltimore Orioles, but had been pressing through his first few Grapefruit League games, according to manager Buck Showalter.
"It's just, I know what 0-for-whatever looks like," Showalter told Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun on Wednesday. "You look at things other than that. He is pressing. I think there are some things you'll see look a lot differently when he gets a couple (hits) under his belt, but this is the big leagues. It's competitive and it's unforgiving. It's an unforgiving place."
