The New York Yankees will promote top pitching prospect Luis Severino within the next week, general manager Brian Cashman told reporters Friday.
It's unclear exactly when the right-hander will make his debut, but he last pitched Wednesday in Triple-A. Assuming Severino stays on his regular throwing schedule, a Tuesday debut against the Boston Red Sox makes sense after the Yankees' off-day Monday.
The 21-year-old is the third-ranked pitching prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB.com, behind Pittsburgh's Tyler Glasnow and Washington's Lucas Giolito.
Severino is dominating at the Triple-A level since being promoted from Double-A Trenton, posting a 7-0 record with a 1.91 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 11 starts.
Michael Pineda's forearm strain and CC Sabathia's hospitalization due to dehydration have cleared Severino's path to the majors.
The Yankees didn't make a move to improve their pitching staff prior to the 4 p.m. ET non-waiver trade deadline.
