Red Sox to retire Pedro Martinez's No. 45 in July
Pedro Martinez is set to become immortalized in Boston Red Sox history as the Hall of Fame electee will be the eighth player to have his number retired by the organization.
The ceremony will take place at Fenway Park on July 28, two days after the right-hander is enshrined in Cooperstown.
Martinez joins Bobby Doerr, Joe Cronin, Johnny Pesky, Carl Yastrzemski, Ted Williams, Jim Rice, and Carlton Fisk as the only players to have their number retired by the Red Sox.
"To be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame upon his first year of eligibility speaks volumes regarding Pedro's outstanding career, and is a testament to the respect and admiration so many in baseball have for him," said Red Sox principal owner John W. Henry.
“We very much look forward to honoring Pedro's remarkable career this July."
Acquired from the Montreal Expos in 1997, Martinez played seven seasons with the Red Sox, winning two Cy Young Awards, making four all-star appearances, and was a part of the 2004 World Series winning team.
