Joakim Soria has not allowed a baserunner since March 12, but Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that there is no competition for the closer role at this time despite Joe Nathan's struggles this spring.
Soria has not allowed a baserunner since Mar. 12, but Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that there is no competition for the closer role despite Joe Nathan's struggles this spring.
Analysis:
Nathan's fastball was sitting at 89-90 mph in his most recent appearance Thursday, and he was dealing with a fingernail issue on his thumb after that appearance. Of greater concern is that Nathan has struggled with his command this spring on the heels of a disappointing 2014 campaign. Soria could be one of the first next-in-line relievers to get an opportunity to take over the job if Nathan's struggles persist with Opening Day approaching.
