Jose Tabata failed to crack the Pittsburgh Pirates' roster after a dreadful spring, as the team opted to reassign the five-year veteran to minor-league camp on Friday.
Hoping to land the fourth outfield job, Tabata slashed .167/.194/.200 with seven strikeouts in 31 plate appearances.
The 26-year-old has spent his entire career with the Pirates, splitting last season between the majors and Triple-A.
Tabata enjoyed mixed success in 2014. Despite boasting a .282 average in 174 at-bats, only seven of his 49 hits were for extra bases.
Andrew Lambo and Jaff Decker are expected to compete for the final bench position after avoiding cuts.
