Armed with a protective cage attached to his helmet, Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton stepped into the batter's box during a simulated game Saturday for the first time since suffering a gruesome season-ending injury.
The third plate appearance was met with an unfortunate result as Stanton was drilled in the left hip by a Henderson Alvarez fastball. The two-time All-Star proved to be no worse for wear though.
"The good thing is he turned the right way," manager Mike Redmond said. "I think we've all kind of anticipated that happening. It's probably better to get it out of the way now. I know it's kind of been in all the pitchers' minds when he steps in there. He stepped out, he handled it fine and then moved on."
