Phegley appears to have an excellent shot to be the A's second catcher this season, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.
Analysis:
Phegley, acquired in the Jeff Samardzija trade, will likely serve as the right-handed platoon partner to starting catcher Stephen Vogt. Vogt is still recovering from offseason foot surgery, so Phegley could see more at-bats than usual early in the season. Phegley has struggled in his major league stints so far with a .207 batting average over 241 at-bats, but showed significant pop at Triple-A in 2014 with 23 homers and a .861 OPS in 419 at-bats.
