VIDEO: Rare footage of Senators winning 1924 World Series
It's not everyday a 90-year-old video emerges in near perfect condition of a 12-inning, World Series Game 7 walk-off thriller.
The Washington Post's Dan Steinberg passes along this gem unearthed by the Library of Congress, which shows four minutes of footage from the Washington Senators' title-clinching win over the New York Giants in the 1924 World Series.
Included in this incredibly rare video is footage of Senators right-hander Walter Johnson. His rubber-arm earned the win in the decisive Game 7 with four innings of relief after throwing 12 innings in the series opener and another eight in Game 5.
From the Washington Post:
When eight cans of nitrate film arrived at the Library of Congress in August, a staffer began a routine inspection to see what sort of physical condition the film was in. Without even watching the footage, she quickly noticed a headline screaming out from one of the newsreels: “SENATORS WIN WORLD SERIES,” it said. “40,000 frantic fans see American Leaguers take 12-inning deciding game, 4 to 3.”
Steinberg chronicles the video's backstory, which is almost as impressive as the footage itself.
