Report: Athletics to lose Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento
The Oakland Athletics are losing their Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
The move was reportedly initiated entirely by the River Cats, who filed to end their 15-year-old partnership with the A’s, and could announce a new affiliation (widely expect to be with the San Francisco Giants) as soon as Tuesday.
In those 15 years as an A's affiliate, the River Cats won seven Pacific Coast League titles and led the minors in attendance in eight different seasons.
But even amidst that success, the River Cats were apparently left wanting. Per Slusser, the general assumption is that the team's ownership group believes that the Giants’ greater popularity in Northern California will boost attendance even further.
