Braves' Venters to undergo 3rd Tommy John surgery

Atlanta Braves reliever Jonny Venters is hoping the third time's the charm.

The 29-year-old began experiencing soreness in mid-June during rehab and was diagnosed with a torn UCL after meeting with Dr. James Andrews earlier this week. Despite the devastating news, the thought of retiring never became a logical option for Venters.

“It [surgery] really wasn’t that big of a question for me,” Venters told Thomas Stinson of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “My wife (Viviana) was with me at Dr. Andrews’ (office). We sat there and it never really crossed my mind to retire, to give up and quit.

“If I was 38, it might be a little different. I’m only 29. So hopefully, I have my age working for me. We’ll see. I’m going to give it a shot.”

Venters, who signed a one-year deal with the Braves in November, previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2005 and 2012.
