Monday's lone afternoon baseball game was never pegged as a pitcher's duel.
The San Diego Padres sent 37-year-old Jason Lane, a former outfielder, to the mound to start in Ian Kennedy's place. He faced Atlanta Braves right-hander Ervin Santana, who has 10 years of major league experience (as a pitcher, of course) to his name.
An infield single in the sixth snapped a stretch of 10 straight retired by Lane. He held the Braves scoreless until allowing a solo home run to Evan Gattis to lead off the seventh inning and put Atlanta up 1-0.
Before Lane, no pitcher at least his age making a first MLB start had gone more than five innings since a 42-year-old Satchel Paige went seven in 1948.
Manager Bud Black lifted Lane after he gave up a no-out single to Chris Johnson in the seventh. He lasted 92 pitches, allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out two. Lane also recorded his first big league hit since Sept. 11, 2007.
For Atlanta, Santana matched a career high with his 11th strikeout to end the seventh.
