3 potential landing spots for Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy
There are many teams seeking pitching depth in the form of a veteran starter as the trade deadline looms. The Boston Red Sox rolled the dice on acquiring Jake Peavy for their stretch run a year ago, a move that resulted in the team's third World Series title in the past decade.
Although Peavy's numbers weren't stellar (0-1, 7.11 ERA in three starts) in the postseason a year ago, his presence was a calming and helpful influence on some of the team's younger pitchers. Peavy, who is making $14.5 million in 2014, is set to become a free agent at season's end, making him a potential rental player for a contender.
Here are three teams that may make a play for the right-hander's services:
St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals have already reportedly reached out to the Red Sox regarding Peavy in the wake of injuries to Jaime Garcia and Michael Wacha. St. Louis enters the break just one game behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central, making wins down the stretch essential to ensure a division pennant rather than a risky wild-card berth.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves pitching staff has been decimated by injuries this year (Kris Medlen, Brandon Beachy, Gavin Floyd) and could benefit from the addition of Peavy. Atlanta has already proven its willing to gamble on veteran over-the-hill- type arms by giving Aaron Harang (9-6, 3.53 ERA) an opportunity, a decision that has helped keep the Braves in the playoff picture in the National League East to this point.
New York Yankees
Much like the Braves, the Yankees rotation is snake-bitten with injuries. CC Sabathia, Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda are all dealing with significant injuries, leaving the burden of a playoff run on their young arms such as Chase Whitley and Shane Greene. The Bronx Bombers already acquired Brandon McCarthy to try and stop the bleeding, but if the Red Sox are willing to eat some of Peavy's salary, he could end up in pinstripes by July 31.
