The 6-foot-4, 240-pound University of Indiana product is believed to possess the most raw power of any player in last week's draft.
Schwarber led the Big Ten with 18 home runs in his sophomore season with Indiana in 2013, setting a school record.
He led the Hoosiers to their first College World Series appearance and first conference title since 1932.
