Orioles' Machado suspended 5 games for bat-throwing incident, Abad fined
Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado is being suspended five games and fined by Major League Baseball for 'intentionally throwing his bat onto the field Sunday.'
Yahoo Sports' Tim Brown tweets the young infielder is planning to appeal the decision.
Machado sparked a benches-clearing brawl with the Oakland Athletics after launching his bat toward third base during his at-bat in the eighth inning.
A's pitcher Fernando Abad is also being slapped with a fine by the league. Abad threw two pitches way inside to Machado during the at-bat in question. Crew chief Larry Vanover deemed both actions intentional and ejected Machado and Abad.
Update - 3:12 p.m:
Machado is batting second and playing third base for Tuesday's contest against the Boston Red Sox. His presence in the lineup means he'll appeal his five-game suspension.
Os lineup: Markakis 9, Machado 5, Jones DH, Davis 3, Cruz 7, Hardy 6, Lough 8, Joseph 2, Flaherty 4. Tillman RHP
