GIF: Red Sox outfielder Mike Carp pitches inning of relief
Perhaps the Red Sox should have turned to Mike Carp a little sooner.
The Red Sox outfielder/first baseman made his first appearance on a major league mound Thursday, giving his team some much needed relief in the ninth inning of Boston's 14-5 loss to the Yankees.
Carp, who clocked as high as 82 miles per hour on the radar gun, was the only Red Sox pitcher to not give up a hit on the night. He did, however, give up a run and issued five walks in his lone inning of work.
He also mixed in a few knuckleballs, some of which were actually half decent.

Before Carp entered the game, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe offered up a scouting report on the Red Sox reserve:
Mike Carp has long said he throws a legit knuckleball. We shall see.

Needless to say, baseball Twitter had fun with it:
Carp has to throw strikes. Yankees won't go fishing.

In a parallel universe known as San Diego, pitcher Andrew Cashner is playing LF while LF Mike Carp pitches at Fenway.

Carp now has half as many walks as Uehara does over the last two years. #RedSox
