The Chicago Cubs and free-agent starter Jason Hammel agreed to a one-year deal Friday.
The right-hander spent last season in Baltimore going 7-8. In 139 1/3 innings, Hammel posted a 4.97 ERA and 1.23 WHIP while striking out 96 and walking 48.
Hammel will likely slide into the back of the rotation behind Jeff Samardzija, Travis Wood and Edwin Jackson.
The 31-year-old was initially seeking a deal in the three-to-four year range with Cleveland and San Francisco reportedly having interest.
