The Rockies reportedly fortified their depth behind the plate on Thursday, signing veteran catcher Michael McKenry to a minor-league deal that includes an invitation to spring training, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post.
McKenry, who was non-tendered by the Pirates earlier this offseason, hit .217/.262/.348 with three home runs in 41 games as Russell Martin's backup last season. The 28-year-old will likely serve a similar role for the Rockies if he manages to make the big-league club.
However, the possibility still exists that McKenry could receive more playing time than anticipated. Hardly enamored with incumbent catcher Wilin Rosario's defensive prowess -- he allowed nine passed balls last season, tying him for the most in the National League -- the Rockies have entertained the idea of moving him to the outfield.
