Mariners GM: 'I like where we're at right now, but I'd love to do more'
The Seattle Mariners have made so many waves this offseason that it's hard to imagine they're not done yet.
After saying hello to Robinson Cano and acquiring two of the market's leading first base options in Corey Hart and Logan Morrison, general manager Jack Zduriencik still has a wish list.
"If there is a possibility of adding a pitcher, that would be good,” the GM told Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times this week. “I think I’d like to do that. We would entertain another right-handed bat – that would advantageous."
Elsewhere on Zduriencik's list of advantageous components: bullpen help and the addition of a back-up catcher.
"You only have so much you can do so maybe you won’t to do everything, but we are certainly going to try and address these areas that I just mentioned," he said.
As Divish writes, Zduriencik will have to get creative. The GM agreed, adding: "With what we've invested, I do think we'll have to be."
Though Nelson Cruz remains an available bat who fits the right-handed profile, the Mariners already have enough decisions to make with Morrison and Hart (whose surgically repaired knees might not hold up in the outfield) to add 'another DH type.'
Cruz, 33, is coming off a PED suspension and reportedly looking for $16-17 million a year. Divish notes the price tag is particularly high for 'dramatic home/road splits, a history of hamstring issues and a poor defensive player.'
Where, when, or how Seattle will address Zduriencik's areas of need are completely up in the air, but he did mention a few key times the team will keep its eyes open:
“Nothing may happen in the next few days or next few weeks. We could have to go into spring training with what we have and then opportunities present themselves that weren’t there today for certain reasons. We are going to keep the door open, and we’ll continue to work. We had discussions earlier this morning. Just because the winter meetings are over and it’s getting close to Christmas time, we are going to work and work till opening day. I like where we are at right now, but I would love to do more.”
