The Pirates' desire for a strong defensive complement at shortstop reportedly materialized on Thursday, as the club agreed to terms with Clint Barmes on a one-year, $2-million deal, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.
The club has scoured the market all offseason for a defensively-oriented shortstop to pair with 27-year-old Jordy Mercer, who logged 78 games at the position last season.
An 11-year veteran, Barmes produced 12 defensive runs saved last season, the second-highest mark among big-league shortstops (min. 800 innings). The 34-year-old also hit .211/.249/.309 across 330 plate appearances.
