The Seattle Mariners defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday.

Mariners starter Bryce Miller shut down Toronto's offense after allowing a first-pitch home run to George Springer in a shaky first inning, where he also walked two.

After escaping the first, Miller allowed one earned run and two hits during a masterful six-inning performance.

"Can't say enough about Bryce Miller," Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh told Tom Verducci of Fox Sports after the win.

"Obviously on short rest and giving us six strong innings is huge."

Miller and three Seattle relievers retired 23 of the final 24 hitters to secure the series-opening win for the Mariners.

PITCHER IP H ER BB K
Bryce Miller 6 2 1 3 3
Gabe Speier 1 0 0 0 0
Matt Brash 1 0 0 0 1
Andrés Muñoz 1 0 0 0 0

Miller said it was his goal to pitch deep into the game after the Mariners used seven pitchers during their 15-inning victory over the Detroit Tigers in Game 5 of the ALDS.

Two of Seattle's runs came in the sixth inning when Raleigh hit a home run off Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman before Jorge Polanco drove in Julio Rodríguez with an RBI single off left-hander Brendon Little. Little allowed Rodríguez to reach second base on a wild pitch after Gausman walked him and was removed from the game.

The homer was Raleigh's ninth blast in 14 career games at Rogers Centre. Blue Jays manager John Schneider said he considered walking the powerful slugger, who hit 60 home runs during the regular season, before he hit the round-tripper.

"Every single time he comes to the plate I'm considering it, to be honest with you," Schneider said postgame, according to Mike Vorel of the Seattle Times.

Polanco's second RBI came in the eighth off Seranthony Domínguez, who walked two and allowed two stolen bases in the frame.

Gausman was terrific for the Blue Jays in a losing effort, allowing two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts across 5 2/3 innings.

Game 2 of the ALCS gets underway Monday in Toronto at 5:03 p.m. ET.

Rookie right-hander Trey Yesavage will start for the Blue Jays in Game 2 opposite right-hander Logan Gilbert for the Mariners.
