The Toronto Blue Jays placed right-hander José Berríos on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation, the team announced Thursday.

Reliever Paxton Schultz was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Berríos has been dealing with this issue for a while, manager John Schneider said, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi. He'll reportedly undergo an MRI to determine the full extent of the injury.

This marks the first time that the normally durable Berríos has been placed on the IL in his 10-year career. He's made at least 30 starts in every 162-game season since 2018, and he hasn't missed time due to injury since August 2014, when he was in Double-A, per Baseball Savant.

The 31-year-old has been inconsistent of late. Berríos' 4.17 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 2025 are his highest marks since his rookie season. His struggles led the Blue Jays to remove him from the rotation after promoting top prospect Trey Yesavage last week.

Berríos threw two innings of relief in Wednesday's loss to the Boston Red Sox, allowing three runs on two hits while striking out three and walking two. It marked his first appearance in eight days.

The Blue Jays are already without veteran starter Chris Bassitt, who was placed on the IL with a back issue last week. They also pushed Shane Bieber's scheduled start from Thursday against Boston to Friday versus the Rays due to workload issues in his comeback from Tommy John surgery.

Toronto entered play Thursday tied with the New York Yankees atop the AL East, having lost six of its last seven games. Reliever Louis Varland is starting Thursday's series finale against the Red Sox as an opener.
