Report: Nationals hiring Paul Toboni as head of baseball ops
The Washington Nationals are finalizing a deal to name Paul Toboni the franchise's next head of baseball operations, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.
Toboni, 35, is currently serving as assistant general manager for the Boston Red Sox.
The Nationals have been without a baseball operations leader since firing GM Mike Rizzo as well as manager Davey Martinez in early June. Senior vice president and assistant GM Mike DeBartolo filled the role on an interim basis.
Toboni originally joined an MLB front office in 2013 when the Athletics hired him as a baseball operations intern. He then quickly rose through the ranks with the Red Sox, going from intern in 2015 to assistant GM in 2023.
For a Nationals team in need of a serious infusion of talent, it's worth noting Paul Toboni ran the draft for Boston when it chose Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell, Payton Tolle, Connelly Early and the prospects who went to Chicago in the Garrett Crochet deal.

Toboni played two years of college baseball at California, hitting .115/.219/.115 over 24 games.
