Red Sox reliever not a fan of Brewers bunting: 'Swing the bat'

Boston Red Sox reliever Chris Martin took exception to a couple of bunts from the Milwaukee Brewers in the top of the seventh inning of Sunday's game.

The Brewers bunted in consecutive at-bats against Martin in the seventh, leading to him having some words with Milwaukee first base coach Quintin Berry as the inning ended. The benches proceeded to clear, though no punches were thrown and no players or coaches were ejected.

"I didn't like it," Martin said postgame, per Tyler Milliken of 98.5 The Sports Hub. "I know it's part of the game, but it is what it is. I let them know."

Martin escaped the inning without allowing a run as the Red Sox held on for a 2-1 win to avoid a three-game sweep.

"Honestly, probably a compliment," Martin said of the Brewers bunting against him. "Maybe they don't think they can get a hit or whatever. ... I feel like in this league, swing the bat."

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said his team was just standing up for itself when Martin started yelling in Berry's direction.

"If you're staring at somebody, and you're saying it, it could be interpreted that you're saying it (to us)," Murphy said, according to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "So you know, we take offense to you yelling at us and saying something and making it personal. We're going to stand up for ourselves."
