Cardinals deal Orioles 1st sweep in 2 years
The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon to sweep a three-game series at Busch Stadium.
It's the Orioles' first regular-season sweep in 106 series since they dropped a three-game set to the Detroit Tigers in May 2022. Star catcher Adley Rutschman made his MLB debut later that month.
The streak was tied for the second longest in MLB history. The St. Louis Cardinals went 125 consecutive series from 1942-44, and the New York Giants also avoided a sweep in 106 straight series from 1903-05.
"This is one series," Orioles outfielder Austin Hays said, according to MLB.com's Jake Rill "Yeah, we went 100-and-something series without getting swept, but just continuing to turn the page and move on to the next game, like we've done for the last two years, that's what we have to do."
The Orioles held a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning before Cardinals first baseman Brendan Donovan hit a little-league home run that scored three runs after Orioles catcher James McCann made an error trying to throw Donovan out at third base.

St. Louis hadn't swept a team this season. The win improved the Cardinals' record to 23-26. They've won eight of their last 10 contests to pull within 5.5 games of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central.
