The Pittsburgh Pirates are acquiring catcher Joey Bart from the San Francisco Giants for right-hander Austin Strickland, the clubs announced Tuesday.
The Giants designated Bart for assignment on Sunday. The 27-year-old was the second overall pick in the 2018 MLB draft. He will provide catching depth behind Henry Davis and veteran Yasmani Grandal, who's currently on the injured list due to plantar fasciitis.
Bart is a career .219 hitter with 11 home runs, 38 RBIs, and 59 runs scored across 162 games.
Strickland, 21, was an eighth-round pick in the 2023 draft. He posted a 4-2 record with a 5.04 ERA and 58 strikeouts at the University of Kentucky last season.
