Braves trade Marco Gonzales to Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired left-hander Marco Gonzales and cash from the Atlanta Braves for a player to be named later, the Braves announced Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Pirates said they are sending a PTBNL or cash back to Atlanta.
The Braves traded for Gonzales in a five-player deal with the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.
Gonzales posted a 5.22 ERA with a 1.46 WHIP over 50 innings (10 starts) last season before undergoing a procedure for a nerve issue in his forearm. The nine-year veteran will make $12 million in 2024.
The 31-year-old owns a career 4.14 ERA with 665 strikeouts over a combined 893 innings (155 starts) between the Mariners and St. Louis Cardinals.
Gonzales instantly becomes the most experienced starter in a Pirates rotation led by Mitch Keller.
Pittsburgh's starters amassed the fourth-worst fWAR (6.9) in the majors during the 2023 campaign.
