The Miami Marlins are hiring Tampa Bay Rays general manager Peter Bendix as their new president of baseball operations, the club announced Monday.

"I am eager to get to South Florida and to begin working with the talented and passionate people throughout the Marlins organization," Bendix said in a statement.

The 38-year-old executive started in Tampa Bay's organization as an intern, rising into roles such as vice president and vice president of baseball operations. He was named general manager in December 2021 after Erik Neander was promoted to president of baseball operations.

Miami had been on the hunt for a new top executive after former GM Kim Ng declined a mutual option to return for 2024.

Marlins owner Bruce Sherman was interested in hiring someone with roots in the Rays organization and showed interest in former Tampa Bay executive and Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom before hiring Bendix. Bloom declined to make himself a candidate, a source told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

Bendix takes over a Marlins club coming off a surprising playoff appearance following an 84-win season. Miami lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in the wild-card round.
