Ohtani to hit in 2024, won't pitch until 2025 after elbow surgery

Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani announced that he underwent elbow surgery Tuesday.

Ohtani didn't disclose the type of surgery he underwent.

The doctor who performed the procedure said the 29-year-old will be able to hit without any restrictions by Opening Day of 2024 and return to pitching by 2025, Ohtani's agent said in a statement obtained by the Washington Post's Chelsea Janes.

Ohtani was diagnosed with a torn UCL on Aug. 24 but continued to hit for the Angels until an oblique injury ended his season Sept. 3.

The 2021 American League MVP is the front-runner for the same award this season after hitting .304/.412/.654 with 44 home runs, 95 RBIs, and 20 steals. He also posted a 10-5 record with a 3.14 ERA and 11.4 K/9 in 132 innings as a pitcher.

Ohtani is a pending free agent and is expected to command one of the most lucrative contracts in baseball history.
